AltFantasy Sports is a fantasy sports site where people can play season-long and daily fantasy sports games for sports leagues that aren't generally supported by the major sites. In 2019, I was anxiously awaiting news of where new fans could play fantasy football for the brand new Alliance of American Football spring gridiron football league. A week before the first kickoff, I realized that if anyone was going to do it, they would have released it already. And nobody had released anything. So I took it upon myself. In a weekend, I threw together a janky site with every corner cut that I could think of. It barely worked, but I figured it would be good enough for me and a few of my friends to play fantasy football for this new league. I posted a link to Reddit, closed my computer, and headed out to get some groceries. An hour later, I got home and hundreds of people had signed up. I was gobsmacked. And I realized I had a ton of work to do since it appeared it was going to be a site for more than just me and my friends.
I've been working on it ever since. It crashes a lot less now, looks a little bit better visually than it first did, and supports a ton more sports. After that first AAF season, the alt-league sportswriter and general sports data aficionado Adam Pelletier came on to help do everything but code, and things have been steadily progressing since then. We now support spring gridiron football, indoor football, CFL, lacrosse, women's basketball, and a host of other sports other than the big ones on the major platforms. We're now working on apps and other integrations for the site. I really want this to be an experimental corner of the fantasy sports world: where the kernels of new games are created and people can come hang out any time of the year and meet and play games with some other weird sports nerds.
Update
I just pushed out the code to open up fantasy leagues for the 2026 United Football League! This is going to be a good year at AFS. There have been a bunch of things that I've completed like 90% of over the past few years and this is the year to finally finish and launch all of them. A long awaited mobile app is coming by kickoff. We'll have some better public leagues. We'll have better daily and weekend long games. And finally... we'll officially start the new cycle that'll give us year-round international gridiron fantasy football. I've been improving the backend code, and that allows me to add new leagues and sports much easier. And I plan on taking advantage of that. Check out the Discord to keep up with the changes over there. I don't know who to root for this season now that Memphis is gone. :(
